Zingg hired Dr. William S. Chepil, a soil scientist, in March of 1948. Dr. Chepil was conducting wind erosion research in Saskatchewan, Canada. Dr. Chepil became project leader in 1953 and served in that capacity until his death from cancer in September 1963
