Windgen records for Continental US stations were developed from the TD_6421 data set, which used the AWSMSC numbering system. If the WMO number for the station exists, the AWSMSC number is the WMO number with a zero appended. It appears that the AWSMSC number corresponds to the USAF number (See USAF-WBAN.txt) NARR station numbers are not part of these data sets. The number origin is unknown. For Alaska, HI, Puerto Rico, Canada and China, the numbers were assigned with the precedence: WMO number (with zero appended to the end) (see master-location-identifier-database-202112_standard.csv) AWSMSC number (see WBAN-MSC.txt) USAF number (see USAF-WBAN.txt) WBAN number (see all three files) NOTE: the Puerto Rico stations have a *stn.txt defining the data source stored in this repository. There is a six station identifier number 99* that is apparently an AWSMSC number, but that does not appear in any of the other station lists. This is used as the station number when the search of the other files does not yield a result. This avoids using a "made up" WBAN number as was done with several of the stations. (see comments in windgen/db/PR_wind_data/scripts/make_wdb_files_final.sh) For use in WEPS, Alaska Station numbers need to be modified in concert with the Windgen GIS polygons. Migration of these changes into WEPS requires modifying weps.install/db/windgen and the Climate(windgen) CSIP service together. CSIP allows versioning of the service end point, so the new version should be created there before updating weps.install. THen weps.install can be updated, including the configuration files to point to the correct service. Sources for the reference files: master-location-identifier-database-202112_standard.csv (downloaded from: www.weathergraphics.com/identifiers and saved with the .org extension) NOTE: Names in this list contained extended characters, which prevented grep from working correctly. These were removed using the command listed in binary-char.txt USAF-WBAN.txt (downloaded from: https://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds463.2/station_libraries/ISH-HISTORY.TXT.html) WBAN-MSC.TXT (downloaded from: http://rda.ucar.edu/datasets/ds900.1/WBAN-MSC.TXT) A worldwide list of AWSMSC and WBAN station numbers for TD3280 datasets is available but was not used or saved here. It does not contain any metadata but may be useful for cross checks. (see: https://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/winds/asos-wx/WBAN-MSC.TXT)
