Soil Erosion by Wind and its Control
More than seventy years after the end of the Dust Bowl, wind erosion continues to threaten the
sustainability of our nations' natural resources. The Natural Resources Conservation Service
(NRCS) is the primary agency through which research and knowledge about wind erosion is
directly transferred to the land manager. In addition to NRCS, agencies such as the Cooperative
Extension Service, the Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, as well as universities
and conservation districts are involved in the transfer of wind erosion technology to those applying
it to the land. Each have expressed the need for training materials in wind erosion and its control.
Wind erosion involves complicated and dynamic physical processes. As such, a firm understanding of
the physical principles of wind erosion is essential to understanding the basis of control practices.
An educational video/DVD has been produced which fully describes the physical basis for
wind erosion processes and wind erosion control systems. Graphics, including photos, video, and
computer animation of the physical principles of wind erosion are utilized. The video emphasizes
farming systems which target a goal of zero soil loss from wind erosion. This audio-visual approach
will provide land managers and other conservation partners with a better understanding of the physical
principles of wind erosion and its control.
